KTPM 42 has a nice story and video with Chuck Hagel catching up with him on life after the U.S. Senate.

Dear Sen. Hagel,

You may recall I wrote a letter to the Editor about you entitled: "One Final Patrol."

Now that Obama is President, we see our involvement in Iraq and Afganistan continuing. Many like me did not vote for MCCain simply because he was pro-war.

The war is not ending soon enough to suit me. Is it for you?

Could it be that, after all, you still need to take one final patrol to bring home your fellow soldiers?

I think history will show that the invasion of Iraq did not serve the vital national security interests of the United States. (I placed my trust in Secretary Powell and did not initially oppose the war, turning against it only when the truth began to trickle out several months into the occupation.)

As for Afghanistan, the question is more complicated. I supported the invasion of Afghanistan in response to the attacks of 9/11; however, I assumed the central purpose was to destroy al-Qaida training camps and bring bin Laden to justice -- not a long-term occupation or nation-building.

I fear mission creep in Afghanistan and am deeply concerned it could well become Obama's "Vietnam."
