Profile in Courage

Joseph L. Galloway, co-author of the best-seller "We Were Soldiers Once ... and Young", has an article that's worth a read: "Hagel and Webb: Two profiles in courage."

Chuck Hagel doesn't have "courage." He's just getting a little bit full of himself going on about how it's honorable to vote on a meaningless Senate resolution. If Chuck Hagel is a man of principle and really believes that Iraq is a failed mission then he should cut off founding for our troops on the ground. In the article, Joseph didn't mention an alternative way to win in Iraq. That's because people like Webb, Hagel, Boxer and John Edwards are willing to accept defeat of the United States.

The bipartisan resolution being considered in the Senate is not "anti-troop" or "anti-victory," and it certainly isn't meaningless. It says that, instead of more troops being injected into the middle of a civil war, the troops that are there should be moved out towards the border of the country---something that could actually help the situation in Iraq. If the resolution were meaningless, then why are Republican leaders introducing other resolutions (like McCain is doing) and also trying to block a vote on it? The resolution says that we can do better for our troops and for the security of our country, and in passing it the Senate will send a strong bipartisan message that the President will have to take seriously.

You know, it's not defeatist to pull out of Iraq; it's defeatist to stay. This war is costing billions in dollars and thousands in lives, with really very little payoff promised in the long run. Iraq has been disarmed and Saddam removed from power. The creation of a stable democracy in Iraq is up to the Iraqis, and, in any event, it would likely not be one favorable to U.S. interests. I'm sure Senator Hagel is taking a lot of heat from his party for standing up and saying what's right. It takes a real patriot to do the right thing in the face of adversity. Too long Republicans have only been allowed to choose between neocon-ism and liberalism (which are kissing cousins in my opinion). Go get 'em Chuck!
